Inspection and Testing of Fire Dampers and Smoke Control Dampers

With the huge success of our certified kitchen extract and canopy cleaning service, Cleaning Scotland has now launched the Inspection and Testing of Fire Dampers and Smoke Control Dampers. This is an essential fire safety service which complies with BS 5588-9 code of practice for ventilation and air conditioning ductwork. This newly updated legislation states that fire dampers should be cleaned and maintained at intervals of at most a year.

Dampers are located within ventilation and air conditioning ducts and designed to prevent the spread of fire inside the ductwork. This process forms a critical part of any passive fire strategy. In the event of a rise in temperature, typically caused by heat or smoke, the damper will close. Heat or smoke identified within the system may indicate presence of a fire, which should activate the closure of the damper blades and prevent the spread of fire through the building.

Fire and Fire Smoke Dampers are a critical part of the fire protection system. As such they must comply with several regulations. They are installed in all types of environments including offices, hospitals, universities, colleges, schools etc. Their function is the same in all buildings – to protect the occupants from fire and smoke.

Our fully trained and certified staff are qualified to carry out a full inspection and test procedure for both these units, not only to verify that they work but also able to fully report any faults and any improvement required in an unbiased way using a standard format of reporting.

Your technician will check that the damper installation has not been compromised; check the integrity of the ductwork either side of the damper to ensure there is adequate support for the damper and ductwork; ensure no serious corrosion and access panels fitted as per BESA TR19 Standard

In accordance with BS9999:2017, inspection should be undertaken annually although local regulations may override this with periodic inspections being carried out more frequently where corrosive or dirty conditions prevail.
